For this project we have chosen a handicraft technique and a personal concept, to show our identity as a designer.
Fragment/Ferment is based on two handicraft techniques; connect and assemble, which is about connecting loose segments to create a entirety and Broderie Anglaise, a technique where holes are cut into a fabric and then prevented from shredding by trimming them with thread. The thread is also used to create embroideries on the fabric and could be used to connect the loose fragments.
Being biodegradable is important both visual and in materials. Visually it's used to mold the garment; shapes will appear as if they are grown onto the body, onto a form we're familiar with. The colors are natural but dark, like composting resources. The materials are all fully biodegradable, which means they are natural and if dyed, only with non-polluting, natural pigments. Bacterial cellulose, created in an innovative fermentation process, will be an important material.
The end result is a 2D collection for spring/summer 2015, called Fragment/Ferment. It consists of 8 outfits, of which one is realized and presented in a catwalk show and a photoshoot.
